Secondhand Clothing by City
ThriftClothing currently lists 479 published secondhand clothing stores across 6 US launch markets. The mix of store types — thrift, vintage, consignment and more — differs from city to city. Counts below update automatically from the live directory.
Miami-Dade
159 storesThrift is the largest category (96 of 159 listed stores), followed by Charity Thrift (28) and Consignment (17). 1 listed store has no type assigned yet.
Chicago
100 storesConsignment is the largest category (62 of 100 listed stores), followed by Thrift (23) and Vintage (13).
These are ThriftClothing directory classifications, not a count of every store in the city. Most of Chicago’s consignment listings are named “resale shops” and were classified as consignment from their names and listing data; these classifications have not been individually verified. Several carry hospital or charity names, so some may sell donated goods rather than consigned items.

What ThriftClothing's data shows
These are observations about ThriftClothing's published directory in six US launch markets — not a census of every secondhand clothing store in each city.
- —The largest category differs by market. Thrift is the largest category in Miami-Dade, Philadelphia and Austin. Consignment is the largest category in Chicago. Vintage is the largest category in Portland. Seattle has a tie between Consignment and Charity Thrift.
- —One type makes up a majority in 3 markets. More than half of listed stores share a single type in Miami-Dade (Thrift, 60%), Chicago (Consignment, 62%) and Philadelphia (Thrift, 59%).
- —Listing counts vary by market. Miami-Dade has the most listed stores (159); Portland has the fewest (38).
- —Some categories appear in only one market so far. Kids Resale (Seattle, 3 stores), Vintage Market (Seattle, 2 stores) and Outdoor Resale (Seattle, 1 store). With so few stores, these say little about the wider market.
Methodology
These figures cover every store currently published in ThriftClothing's directory for each launch market. They are directory observations, not market-wide statistics: the directory does not include every secondhand clothing store in each city.
Each listed store has a store type. Types are assigned from available signals — the store's name, known chains, and listing data — and refined during review. Most have not been individually verified, so some stores may be misclassified. Each store is counted once, under its listed type. Specialty attributes (sizing, denim, outdoor gear) are tracked separately and are not reflected in the type distribution.
Counts and the observations above update automatically as stores are added to or removed from the directory, including when stores close.
